As a Sydney Wedding Photographer for 15+ years, we believe that an engagement session is meant to be very casual. It’s all about how you feel in front of the camera and also getting to know your photographer. Not sure what to wear? You cant overdress. Most photographers don’t really care what you wear in this instance. However, these snapshots are very valuable later on in life as well as during the wedding. These will appear on everything such as Facebook, Instagram, wedding websites, save the date and the list goes on and on. So it important to come prepared on the side of being too dressy rather than extremely casual. So we have created a few basic guidelines to help you in the right direction.

Pick outfits that will make you feel like yourself, comfortable yet elegant. Pick a dress or a shirt which aren’t too colourful, something a little faded. You want people to see the romantic side of you, not staring at the bold clothes.
Stay away from logo t-shirt. I have seen on multiple occasions big logo T-shirt or dress ruins the photos.
Don’t go matchy-matchy. try using complementary outfits instead. Choose something that has a similar vibe, similar colours however not an exact match.
Try not to carry anything in your pockets. It is a big distraction for you and your soon to be wife.
For brides try to wear something soft, warm and slightly faded colour dress. In my opinion, the pastel colours are great. If you really want to wear something bold I will suggest yellow and bright red. These colour looks perfect during golden hours and stands out in social media.
Try to stay away from big graphics T-shirt. The focus needs to be on you not on your T-shirt.
Make sure to iron your clothes to removes any unwanted wrinkles on your clothes.
Try to not to treat this photoshoot as a trendy full-fledged photo shoot.
Have a change of clothes including comfy shoes (in case you need to walk through mud or walk a long distance)
Makeup is a must. Do not show up on your engagement shoot with no makeup and messy hair. Regardless of the beautiful background, it will take away the main purpose of the photoshoot.
Pure Elegance Photos
Arrive early at least half an hour prior to the photoshoot. You will be less stressed throughout the photoshoot.
Try to organize the makeup trial on the same day as the photoshoot. This way you will kill two birds with one stone. I will also suggest to go out to have a proper romantic dinner afterward. Make the night or evening memorable.
Have your ring cleaned up. Make the jewelry sparkle.
Have at least 2 outfits ready so you can get change quickly.
Complete your research of the surrounding area prior to the photo shoot. The photographer may ask for any suggestion or place you would like to photograph. Be well prepared.
Prepare for the windy and rainy weather. Carry an umbrella just in case.
